The Mission of CHIP

CHIP produces internationally recognised research aimed at people with affected immune systems on how best to improve their health and extend life.

Our range of research methodologies:
Adds to the current evidence on how best to prevent and treat infectious diseases by using existing interventions, identifying novel intervention targets and by reclassifying disease taxonomy due to an improved biological understanding of the mechanisms leading to infectious diseases.
Operates with high scientific integrity and state-of-the-art quality through longstanding partnerships with international leaders in the medical and public health fields that share our vision.
Communicates universally to ensure that the results generated by our research projects inform both clinical practice and policy and guideline development.

Rationale

Empiric evidence indicates substantial variation in risk of infectious diseases to individual and public health, and our understanding of the factors that explain this variation remains limited. Focus is therefore targeted on the study of microbial and host factors that determine the risk of contracting infections and the prognosis thereafter.

History

For the last two decades, CHIP has focused primarily on sections of the population having immune dysfunction such as people living with HIV. More recently, this has been expanded to incorporate other patient categories such as organ transplant recipients, cancer patients, patients with autoimmune disease and other groups with increased vulnerability to infectious diseases.

In 2014, CHIP was re-named as a Centre of Excellence by the Capital region of Denmark in addition to receiving a 10-year Danish National Research Foundation Centre of Excellence grant for studying Personalized Medicine of Infectious Complications of Immune Deficiency (PERSIMUNE, www.persimune.dk).

In 1998, CHIP became part of the leadership group for INSIGHT (International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Trials, http://insight.ccbr.umn.edu/), which is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the US.

Collaborations and Staff

CHIPs international network of collaborators, unparalleled statistical and bioinformatics capacity, data-handling and general IT power, permits a very high output of scientific results.
